Anna Utopia Giordano
Biography
Anna Utopia Giordano is an Italian Creative Director and multidisciplinary post-digital and new media artist working across poetry, generative AI, digital art, performance, video and new media. Her practice brings together artistic research, visual communication, poetry, sound, philosophy and emerging technologies, informed by her background in philosophy and her practice of visual philosophy.
She earned a degree with honors in Philosophy from the Università Statale di Milano, with a thesis on Network Science. She is currently completing a degree in Philosophical Sciences at the Università degli Studi di Milano, within the Reasoning, Analysis and Modelling curriculum. She previously attended a scientific high school in Milan, graduating with top marks.
Alongside her artistic practice, she has built a career as a freelance creative director and graphic designer, collaborating with agencies, brands, startups and private clients. Her professional work spans creative direction, concept development, visual identities and strategic communication, combining conceptual thinking with a strong visual and aesthetic sensibility.
Philosophy, AI & Visual Research
Her background in philosophy continues to inform her artistic practice, particularly in the way she approaches images, language and technology. Her work develops through visual and conceptual research, bringing together artistic practice, contemporary culture and digital technologies.
She experiments with generative AI and emerging technologies as part of her creative practice, combining them with digital tools, post-production, writing and visual research. These technologies become part of a broader process of experimentation through which she develops new forms of images, narratives and artistic expression.
Creative Direction & Visual Strategy
Alongside her artistic practice, Giordano works as a freelance creative director, developing visual communication across digital content, e-commerce, social media and websites. Her work spans concept development, visual strategy and design, from the initial idea through to production and final implementation.
She has also worked within agency environments as an Art Director and Creative Strategist, providing strategic consulting across a wide range of visual communication projects, while coordinating creative teams, workflows and production.
Her professional experience includes collaborations with top brands, independent businesses and creative professionals. Her approach combines strategic thinking, visual research and hands-on creative development, allowing her to move between conceptual direction and the practical execution of visual projects.
Post-digital & New Media Art
She currently collaborates with the aperiodic editorial project Wails Papers, curating Poiesis, a visual column where she publishes her AI-assisted and digitally post-produced artworks.
Her AI-assisted digital artwork ZER0, conceived in connection with the homonymous musical composition by Leonardo Barilaro, was launched to the International Space Station aboard the SpaceX CRS-27 mission on March 15, 2023, as part of the Maleth III research project coordinated by the University of Malta. The artwork and the musical composition were subsequently presented during a live stream from the ISS on April 11, 2023. The mission is documented by NASA as part of its Commercial Resupply Service program.
In 2022, Utopia conceived the series ἐκγραφῆς, blending poetry, artificial intelligence and digital post-production. The collection was presented during the seventh edition of Fuori Visioni Contemporary Art Festival in Piacenza, held from 15 to 17 December 2022.
Poetry, sound and video
In March 2021, she released her first spoken-word poetry album, Fogli d'ombra, followed by the music video Entelechia (o sul senso del dovere) in July 2021. The video was selected for numerous national and international festivals, including Venice Film Week, where it received the Best Music Video award in 2022, Magmart and OttobreInPoesia. It was also presented at the Athens Digital Arts Festival (Greece, 2021), the 10th International Video Poetry Festival (Greece, 2022), The Wrong Biennale N.5 – Essence / Absence, Pavilion #10 – Second Wave (NewArt City), the Interface Video Art Festival (Croatia, 2021), and the Brussels Independent Film Festival (Belgium, 2022), among others.
Digital art
Her earlier digital art practice includes a series of projects exploring beauty, self-image, identity, consumer culture and the changing relationship between private life and digital media, including My Social Generation, Venus, PopBottles and #BornToBeVirtual. Created between 2010 and 2014, these works explored emerging forms of digital self-representation and the increasing influence of digital media on identity, beauty and private life.
The series were widely published in international media and cultural publications and presented in exhibitions and cultural contexts including Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen, the Seoul Fringe Festival, Museo FRaC in Baronissi, Museo Irpino in Avellino and Museo MAC3 in Caserta.
Writing and performance
Her poetic practice includes the Rapsodie, a collection of hermetic and cryptic poems characterised by the use of technical, scientific and philosophical language. Her poems have appeared in anthologies, magazines, e-zines and cultural publications. Her poetic work has also been presented in live and exhibition contexts, including Thanateros, a collaborative project with Luca Catellani and Andrea Ropes.
In 2011, she published her poetry collection "WYSIWIG" (What You See Is What I Got), followed by the 2012 e-book "Fotogrammi – Ideas Depiction" (Ed. Siska), in collaboration with Enrico Santus Aversano. Her work with poetry and performance brings together writing, voice, sound and theatrical elements, with performances presented in concerts, exhibitions and cultural events.
Other projects
Her wider creative practice includes Land in Eden (2012), developed in collaboration with Edenlandia in Naples, and Animă (2019), a project created to promote the Fontanelle Cemetery in Naples with the support of the Assessorato alla Cultura e al Turismo, Ufficio Cinema – Comune di Napoli and Film Commission Regione Campania.
Her editorial and curatorial work includes Glimpse, an aperiodic e-zine she founded and directed, and Morphrame, a digital art gallery launched in 2020 as part of the White Page Gallery Network.
She has also contributed to short films, music projects and educational videos, working across performance, image-making and creative production. Her work has included photomodelling and collaborations in which she developed concepts, makeup, hairstyling and production design.
In 2013, she mentored Naked Truths Project, conceived by American choreographer Bianca S. Mendoza.
