ZER0

2023 · Artificial Intelligence, digital post-production

ZER0 is an AI-assisted digital illustration by Anna Utopia Giordano, created for the musical composition of the same name by Leonardo Barilaro. The artwork and composition were sent into space aboard SpaceX CRS-27 on March 15, 2023, as part of the NASA Commercial Resupply Services mission to the International Space Station.

The launch took place at 00:30 UTC as part of the biomedical research mission Maleth III, coordinated by Prof. Joseph Borg of the University of Malta, in collaboration with MCAST, MG2i — MCAST Gateway to Industry — and Spaceomix.

ZER0 travelled aboard the Cargo Dragon C209 capsule, launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The spacecraft successfully reached and docked with the International Space Station on March 16, 2023, at 11:31 UTC. For approximately one month, the artwork and musical composition, together with the Maleth III experiment, were stored on an SD card in the ISS onboard computer through an Ice Cubes platform. The platform was successfully installed by astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre.

A live stream from the ISS took place on April 11, 2023, featuring Prof. Joseph Borg, Roberto Tiscio (Deputy Director at MCAST), Veronica Botti (System Engineer at Space Application Services), Leonardo Barilaro and Anna Utopia Giordano.
